Congressman Morgan McGarvey Slams President Trump’s Harmful Tariffs
LOUISVILLE, KY (February 2, 2025) – Today, following President Donald Trump’s announcement that he will impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, triggering retaliation from both countries, Congressman Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) released the following statement:
“President Trump promised to lower prices, but these tariffs will do the opposite, increasing the cost of food, automobiles, and gas for every American family.
In Kentucky, we will feel the pain even more acutely.
As Canada moves to impose their own retaliatory tariffs on American whisky, the combination will not just raise our cost of living; it will devastate our Commonwealth’s signature bourbon industry — one which generates hundreds of millions of dollars of tax revenue each year and employs tens of thousands of Kentuckians.
We will bear the brunt of Trump’s misguided and impulsive leadership — our farmers, coopers, truckers, manufacturers, and working families everywhere.
Donald Trump’s tariffs are not strategic — they’re petty, shortsighted, and incredibly harmful to American consumers and workers alike. He should rescind them immediately, before they cause any more harm.”
