GREEN AND GOLD CONGRESSIONAL AIDE
Congressman McGarvey is thrilled to participate in the Green & Gold Congressional Aide Program. The Green & Gold Congressional Aide Program was established by the House of Representatives to provide employment opportunities for veterans, Gold Star Families, and active-duty spouses within member offices.
Congressman McGarvey office seeks a veteran, Gold Star Family Member, or an active-duty spouse for a two-year paid position in our Louisville district office. To qualify, veterans must meet all the following requirements: Veterans must be Honorably discharged, released from active duty within the last six years, pay grades at or below E-5, O-3, or W-2. Veterans promoted to the pay grades of E-6, O-4, or W-3 within 6-months of separation from active duty are eligible, granted they meet ALL other eligibility requirements. Veterans who are in receipt of a 20-year or Temporary Early Retirement Authorization (TERA) retirement are not eligible for the program.

STAFF ASSISTANT/LEGISLATIVE CORRESPONDENT (SA/LC)
Congressman McGarvey has an immediate need to hire a Staff Assistant/Legislative Correspondent (SA/LC) role for the Washington, DC office in a full-time capacity.
The SA/LC will be expected to manage the phones during office hours and manage the mail/ constituent correspondence program. Responsibilities include but are not limited to answering phones, sorting incoming mail, researching and monitoring legislation, drafting clear and concise letters, and ensuring timely and accurate responses using our constituent mail system. A successful candidate will have excellent writing and proofreading ability, outstanding organizational and time management capacity, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work independently. Additionally, candidates should have professional telephone and office manners, ability to manage multiple tasks at once, and a desire to be part of a highly-collaborative, high- achieving team.
The position is full time with federal benefits, including student loan repayment program (if eligible), transit or parking benefits, and an annual salary of $55,000.
Job Duties:
- Handles incoming calls with poise, professionalism, and promptness
- Organizes and provides tours of the Capitol and White House under the leadership of the Operations Manager and arranges visits to other national landmarks
- Captures input from constituents on policy matters for the Member office’s consideration and response
- Works with Operations Manager to ensure the interns are trained and up to date on phone etiquette and process
- Drafts tailored letters for constituent inquiries that require special research or a nuanced response
- Creates and maintains a collection of prepared responses for general legislative inquiries
- Ensures that legislative responses to constituents are completed in a timely matter
- Consults with the Legislative Director and Legislative Assistants to ensure the Member’s library of legislative letters is accurate, up to date, and reflective of the Member’s policy positions
- Works with the legislative team to make sure the Congressman has printed and prepared binders for committee work
- Attends legislative meetings with constituents and assists with Committee hearings and markups as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Capitol Hill experience required (internship experience included)
- Experience conducting and synthesizing public policy research
- Comfortable balancing multiple projects and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Takes initiative and go above and beyond to complete assignments
- Attention to detail and ability to create and manage projects and processes
- Strong problem-solving and strategic thinking skills
- Effective teamwork skills and the ability to support the needs of multiple team members and leaders in the office required
- Professional demeanor and an upbeat disposition while interacting with visitors, staff members, and stakeholders in a fast-paced, highly dynamic environment required
- Time management skills including the ability to prioritize, and track work status required

- Willingness to learn
Preferences:
- Bachelor’s degree in government, political science, public policy, or related field
- A demonstrated interest in public service
