SENIOR PRESS SECRETARY / DIRECTOR OF MEDIA RELATIONS
Reports to: Communications Director
BACKGROUND:
Congressman Morgan McGarvey seeks an experienced, proactive Senior Press Secretary or Director of Media Relations to join his Washington, DC team.
This role is a member of the senior staff team and is not an entry-level position. Title and salary are commensurate with experience.
The Senior Press Secretary or Director of Media Relations is responsible for managing all local and national press, including drafting press releases and other written deliverables, proactively pitching TV and print reporters, and leading prep for the Congressman ahead of interviews, town halls, and other speaking engagements. An ideal candidate will bring political savvy and a keen sense of urgency to this role, as well as a proven track record of pitching reporters, placing coverage in local and national media, and shaping stories. Ties to Kentucky or campaign experience are a plus.
The position is full time with federal benefits, including student loan repayment program (if eligible), transit or parking benefits, and annual salary range of $80,000-$85,000 commensurate with experience.
This role is based in the Congressman’s Washington, D.C. office, but may require travel to the district to support media relations and press events.
JOB DUTIES:

Work closely with Communications Director to develop and implement media strategy for the Member;

Proactively pitch local and national reporters;

Manage all written deliverables, including drafting press releases, statements, advisories, talking points, speeches, and interview memos;

Serve as a formal spokesperson and media liaison for the Member;

Lead planning and execution for press conferences or press events;

Expand national and local press relationships;

Support Communications Director as needed, including on rapid-response communications;

Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:

4+ years of relevant experience managing media relations and developing communication strategy for a Member of Congress, candidate, elected official, Federal agency, private, and/or non-profit organization;

Strong written and verbal communication skills;

Politically savvy and comfortable navigating difficult situations with press;

Excellent time management skills;

Ability to work quickly under pressure and meet deadlines;

Ability to collaborate with issue experts and other coworkers;

Attention to detail and;
-
Experience building and maintaining relationships with members of local and national press;

The position requires the flexibility to work long hours, including nights and weekends.
PREFERENCES:

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, government, political science, public policy, or related field
