Congressman Morgan McGarvey tours west Louisville revitalization project

WEST LOUISVILLE, Ky. — "OneWest," a Louisville nonprofit dedicated to elevating Louisville through commercial development, invited Congressman Morgan McGarvey to the Russell neighborhood on Monday to see some of the progress that's been made.

"It's so incredible and important to see this type of investment and revitalization in west Louisville. For too long, there has been neglect. There's been abandonment. And to see this, this neighborhood, this community approach that is rooted in community coming in, and honestly providing incredibly needed affordable housing and incredibly needed available commercial space for west Louisville, is exactly what we need to make all of Louisville stronger," McGarvey said.

Evon Smith, the CEO for "OneWest," said that it's something the west Louisville community has needed for a while. The organization is excited to continue its work, and its conversations with those living in the community.

"OneWest spent three years before I got here spending with the community, meeting with the community, to see what they wanted to happen. So, all of the things we're working on are actually the ideas of the community on what they want to see happening," Smith said.

For those like Aaliyah Richmond, it means finally having a chance to open her dream restaurant, "Brunch & Soul."

Richmond and others will be able to use the space for two years, helping save money and receiving help to find a more permanent spot for small businesses.

"Brunch & Soul," and one other restaurant are set to open in the upcoming weeks. Other projects, like affordable living, are set to open in early 2025.
