Congressman Morgan McGarvey’s Statement on the U.S. Debt Ceiling

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 19, 2023) – Today, Congressman Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) released the following statement after the United States hit its debt limit and the U.S. Department of Treasury  announced it would implement “extraordinary measures” to avoid defaulting on the government’s bills:

“Congress has a constitutional responsibility to raise the debt ceiling to meet obligations the government has already made,” said Rep. McGarvey. “The United States should never be in a position to default on its debt, especially when Republicans are threatening to hold the economy hostage to push through their extremist agenda. Republicans aren’t trying to tighten belts or budget better — they’re dining and dashing on a national scale. This is money the government has already spent, which is why Congress has raised the debt ceiling numerous times on a bipartisan basis. We must do so again to avoid defaulting on our debt. Democrats aren’t going to play political games with the economy; we’re going to keep working to protect the full faith and credit of the United States.”
