Congressman Morgan McGarvey named to the House Veterans Affairs and Small Business Committees for the 118th Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 27, 2023) —  Today, Congressman McGarvey (KY-03) announced he has been named to serve on the House Committee on Veterans Affairs and the House Committee on Small Business in the 118th Congress.

“It’s an honor to serve on the Veterans Affairs Committee and work for those who have worn the uniform and sacrificed for our country,” said Rep. McGarvey. “My grandfather served in World War II and my brother, U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel David McGarvey, has been deployed to multiple battle zones. As a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, I am committed to fighting for the crucial benefits our veterans earned including education, jobs and employment, housing, and healthcare for visible and invisible injuries. I look forward to working with my Democratic colleagues and being a voice for Kentucky veterans in Congress.”

“As a veteran and former commissioner of Veteran Affairs for Kentucky, I know without a doubt that Congressman McGarvey has the tenacity to do what is needed to advocate for the men and women whom our freedom is owed. McGarvey will be an ally, a co-pilot and a voice for America's service members and will deliver real results. On behalf of the commonwealth, thank you for fighting for those who have given their all,” said Keith Jackson, Deputy Secretary, Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet and Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) U.S. Army Reserves.

“I’m so pleased to welcome Rep. Morgan McGarvey to the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs,” said Ranking Member Takano. “His experience in the Kentucky General Assembly will be invaluable as the Committee strives to deliver a VA that understands and accommodates the needs of all who served. I look forward to working with him on improving healthcare access and economic opportunities for veterans.”

The House Veterans Affairs Committee is the authorizing committee for the Department of Veterans Affairs. As the home of Fort Knox and Fort Campbell, Kentucky is a hub of military activity and a magnet for military retirees. The Louisville VA Healthcare System provides care at nine locations across Kentucky and southern Indiana, including at Louisville’s Robley Rex VA Medical Center and eight community-based outpatient clinics. The Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Kentucky’s Third District is one of only four VA hospitals with level one Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation in the United States.

The House Small Business Committee works to support new and small businesses through open access to loans, credit and capital, and give small businesses the tools they need to be successful.

"Over the past two years, American entrepreneurs have led the way in our economic recovery, creating a record number of new small businesses and jobs. During the 118th Congress, the Democrats on this committee will build on this momentum by addressing the lingering challenges small firms face every day," said Ranking Member Velázquez. "Rep. McGarvey is a talented and experienced legislator with a track record of advocating for the interests of entrepreneurs. His skill set will be invaluable to the Small Business Committee, and I look forward to collaborating with him closely as we work to elevate the concerns of entrepreneurs."

“I’m also honored to serve on the Small Business Committee and deliver for small businesses in Kentucky’s Third District,” continued Rep. McGarvey. “While Kentucky is known for iconic global brands, Louisville’s independent restaurants, microdistilleries, and family-owned stores make it one of the most vibrant cities in our country. As minority leader in the Kentucky State Senate, I fought to keep small businesses open and solvent during the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and helped to ensure their employees continued to receive paychecks when they couldn’t work. I’m eager to get to work alongside Congressional Democrats to help our small businesses grow and thrive as we move beyond the pandemic.”
