Congressman Morgan McGarvey’s Statement on U.S. Surgeon General Declaring Gun Violence a Public Health Crisis

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 25, 2024) – Congressman McGarvey (KY-03) released the following statement after the U.S. Surgeon General declared firearm violence a national public health crisis:

“This announcement confirms what we’ve known for a long time — gun violence is a public health epidemic. From mass shootings and self-inflicted injuries to accidental firearm deaths and everyday killings, far too many communities — including Louisville — know the pain of gun violence. No other country in the world has seen this level of death from firearms. After experiencing two mass shootings in one week last year at Old National Bank and Chickasaw Park, and at H20 Lounge this past weekend  — we must make sure no other community feels the pain we felt in Louisville. I’m grateful to the Biden Administration for taking this important step today, and I’ll continue doing everything I can in Congress to pass common-sense gun safety legislation.”
