Congressman Morgan McGarvey Announces 2024 Congressional Art Competition Winners

LOUISVILLE, KY (May 09, 2024) – Today, Congressman Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) announced that Atherton High School Senior Mattie Diehl was selected as the overall winner of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition for her piece, “Happy Jack”. Mercy Academy Senior Hadley Klusman’s piece, “Growing Hands,” was selected as the community choice winner.

“I’m so excited to recognize two incredible pieces of artwork that perfectly represent just how creative and talented Louisville students are,” said Rep. McGarvey. “It’s no surprise that this kind of artistic talent flourishes in our city, but each year I’m blown away by the skill level and individuality we get to see from our high schoolers. I’m excited to see Mattie’s artwork every time I walk to the Capitol, and I look forward to welcoming her to DC to celebrate her achievement!”

"I’m honored to receive this award. The goal of my art is always to tell a story through what I can create, so it its amazing to know that people really connected with this piece!” said Community Choice Winner Hadley Klusman, Mercy Academy.

Once a year, each congressional district collects art submissions from local high schools and determines a winner whose piece is displayed in the U.S. Capitol. Congressman McGarvey’s office received 30 submissions from six schools, and received nearly 1,000 votes in the online voting portal. “Happy Jack” was selected by a panel of judges as the overall winner, and “Growing Hands” was selected by public vote in the online portal as the community choice winner.

Winners are recognized both in the district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
