Congressman Morgan McGarvey’s Statement on Voting to Avoid A Third Republican Government Shutdown
WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 18, 2024) – Congressman Morgan McGarvey released the following statement after voting in favor of a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the federal government through March 1st and March 8th at current spending levels. The continuing resolution avoids a catastrophic Republican shutdown and allows Congress to continue negotiating a funding agreement for fiscal year 2024.
“Extremist Republicans have brought our government to the brink of a shutdown for the third time this Congress,” said Rep. McGarvey. “This isn’t how government should work. I, along with a majority of my Democratic colleagues, voted for this temporary funding bill to keep the government open, pay our troops, make sure moms and babies receive necessary food and formula, and our federal agencies are able to address any domestic and international issues that arise.
“It’s frustrating, but this temporary solution is better than nothing. I’m glad Speaker Johnson, Senate Majority Leader Schumer, and President Biden reached an agreement to keep the government open, and I hope that Speaker Johnson honors the deal his predecessor made last year. It’s our job as legislators to pass a budget, and I’m going to continue working on a bipartisan path forward to keep our government open, funded, and ready to serve the American people.”
The continuing resolution passed 314-108, with 207 Democrats voting to avoid a shutdown. If the bill is not passed by both chambers and signed into law by President Biden, government funding will expire at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, January 20.
