Louisville nonprofit leaders, Rep. McGarvey discuss challenges organizations face

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Rep. Morgan McGarvey joined more than 170 leaders from Louisville-area nonprofits for a breakfast Thursday morning with an open dialogue.

They talked about the challenges nonprofit organizations face, priorities for lawmakers, and the benefits nonprofits bring to communities.

More than 25,000 jobs in Kentucky come from nonprofits. That accounts for nearly $5 billion in annual expenditures.

Despite this, leaders say some of the biggest challenges nonprofits face today are declines in charitable giving, volunteerism that hasn’t bounced back since the COVID-19 pandemic and workforce shortages.

“I know we have not been giving enough funding to our communities. We’ve not been giving enough funding to the people who need it. I told you my religion. I believe, in my life, not just in politics, we are judged by how we treat those in the margins. We’ve not been doing a good enough job. You all have stepped into the gaps. You’re the ones who are doing it and we need your help so that we can push [the legislation] so you can get the resources you need,” McGarvey said.

The event was at the Louisville Marriott Downtown and hosted by the Kentucky Nonprofit Network (KNN) and its local alliance of members, the Louisville Nonprofit Coalition.
