Congressman McGarvey addresses Medicaid fears in town hall meeting

Congressman Morgan McGarvey held a town hall on Wednesday to comfort those who are fearful of Medicaid cuts.

It has been an issue impacting many Jefferson County residents as one in three Louisvillians rely on Medicaid.

McGarvey wanted to hear from real people who use the services.

Groups like Kentucky Voices for Health, The United Way and Park DuValle work on the front lines of healthcare in the Commonwealth.

Their message was clear – cutting any Medicaid would be detrimental.

“We absolutely use Medicaid as our healthcare safety net. It affects every single one of us whether we have Medicaid ourselves or not,” executive director Emily Beauregard, Kentucky Voices for Health explained. “It’s a cradle to grave program and at some point in our lives, most of us will use Medicaid coverage or someone in our family will.”

The Kentucky legislature just passed reforms to Medicaid, adding a work requirement.

Beauregard said the state’s unemployment rate is only 5% and 2% of those people are looking for work.
