Congressman Morgan McGarvey’s Statement on Co-sponsoring Legislation to Honor Muhammad Ali with the Congressional Gold Medal
WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 2, 2023) – Congressman Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) released the following statement after co-sponsoring legislation to award Muhammad Ali the Congressional Gold Medal:
“I’m proud to honor Muhammad Ali’s legacy and join my colleagues in this effort to award him the Congressional Gold Medal,” said Rep. McGarvey. “Born and raised in my district, Muhammad Ali is an inspiration to generations of Americans. From his accomplishments in the boxing ring to his global humanitarian work, Muhammad Ali was dedicated to advancing civil and human rights. It’s my pleasure to commemorate Muhammad Ali’s achievements at the beginning of Black History Month by co-sponsoring this bill to award him with the highest Congressional honor.”
Muhammad Ali was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, and Kentucky’s Third Congressional District is home to the Muhammad Ali Center. The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian award bestowed by Congress. The bill, H.R.1401, the Muhammad Ali Congressional Gold Medal Act, was introduced by Rep. Andre Carson (D-IN).
