Congressman Morgan McGarvey Votes Against Republican Budget Scam

Today, Congressman Morgan McGarvey, a member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement after voting against the House Republican budget proposal that will cut Medicaid, SNAP, and other critical programs:

“Billionaires like Elon Musk poured hundreds of millions into the election and now they are cashing in on their investment: tax cuts for billionaires and the most profitable companies, paid for by our kids, seniors, veterans, and anyone who works hard for a paycheck.

“There is no reason a teacher in Louisville should pay more in taxes than Tesla did last year.

“This is a fight for the future of Medicaid, SNAP, and countless other programs that thousands of Louisvillians rely on each day – and I will not back down.”

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

McGarvey Amendments: Republicans blocked three of Rep. McGarvey’s proposed amendments to the budget:

  • An amendment to remove cuts to Medicaid, CHIP, Affordable Care Act subsidies, and SNAP.
  • An amendment to protect the National School Lunch Program, National School Breakfast Program, and Community Eligibility Provision for school meals from any cuts or reduction.
  • An amendment to raise compensation to Black Lung Program beneficiaries and improve the solvency of the Black Lung Disability Trust Fund without reducing benefits.

Local Impact: The Republican budget will have the following impact in KY-03:

Medicaid:

  • Medicaid covers everything from childbirth to nursing home care and everything in between.
  • In KY-03, the 219,684 people on Medicaid are at risk of losing their health care under Republican budget plans. (Source)
  • This includes 103,784 children under the age of 19 and 17,000 seniors over 65 in KY-03. (Under 19 Source, Over 65 Source)
  • In the past week, over 150 Louisvillians have contacted Rep. McGarvey with concerns that Medicaid will be cut under this plan.

Affordable Care Act:

  • Many families would face even steeper consequences. A 60-year-old couple with a household income of $85,000 in KY-03 would see their health insurance costs increase by $12,403 per year — a 172% increase in premiums. (Source)

SNAP:

  • With many American families struggling to put food on the table, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides critical support for over 40 million Americans including children, seniors, veterans, and working parents.
  • Extreme Republican budget plans threaten the 98,000 people in KY-03 who count on SNAP to put food on the table. (Source)
