Congressman Morgan McGarvey’s Statement on Alabama Supreme Court IVF Ruling
WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 23, 2024) – Today, Congressman Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) released the following statement on the Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling to afford frozen embryos the same protection as children under the state’s “Wrongful Death of a Minor Act”:
“The Alabama Supreme Court’s extreme right-wing ruling defies common sense, contradicts medical standards of care, and lacks basic sympathy for people struggling to start a family. It’s insane. You can’t call yourself a family values party and make it harder for people to have children,” said Rep. McGarvey. “Unfortunately, we shouldn’t be surprised. When the conservative-controlled Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, women and girls in Kentucky lost their right to have an abortion — even in cases of rape and incest. There have been cases across the country where women suffering from miscarriages are criminally charged for going to the doctor and seeking care. And now, families in Alabama will suffer the consequences of this devastating ruling — potentially making it impossible for people struggling with infertility to have more children or start a family. To say I am deeply disturbed by this decision is an understatement, and I will do everything in my power to protect reproductive freedoms in Congress.”
