Congressman Morgan McGarvey Introduces Bill to Honor Alberta Odell Jones’ Legacy
WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 29, 2024) – Congressman McGarvey (KY-03) introduced legislation to rename the post office in downtown Louisville (835 S 7th Street) as the “Alberta Odell Jones Post Office Building.” In December 2023, Congressman McGarvey visited students at Central High School and asked them to decide on an iconic Louisvillian to receive this honor; Alberta Odell Jones, a Central High School alum, was their overwhelming choice.
“Alberta Jones was a tireless trailblazer, civil rights icon, the first Black woman to pass the Kentucky bar, and first Black woman prosecutor in Kentucky. I’m proud to recognize her incredible legacy by renaming a post office in her honor,” said Rep. McGarvey. “Alberta’s memory lives on as we continue to tell her story and honor everything she fought for. Ms. Flora Shanklin, Alberta’s sister, described her as an ‘icon, pioneer’ and noted that ‘she managed to register 6,000-10,000 voters, which led to the City Hall, here in Louisville, to become integrated’. It means the world to me to introduce this legislation and honor Alberta Jones’ legacy at the national level.”
