Congressman Morgan McGarvey Announces Joint Session of Congress Guest
Congressman Morgan McGarvey announced today that Dr. Kim Schatzel, President of the University of Louisville, will be his guest at tomorrow’s Joint Session of Congress. Chartered in 1798, the University of Louisville is the city’s preeminent research university and has been a source of pride and progress for the community for over 200 years.
In recent weeks, the University has been adversely affected by the Trump administration’s freeze on federal funding, including freezing funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The University of Louisville currently has 167 active NIH-funded projects, totaling roughly $82.5 million of funding, according to the Louisville Courier Journal.
If House Republicans successfully cut Medicaid, the university could also lose over $100 million in funding, negatively impacting the School of Medicine and the university health system.
“Universities are the backbone of a healthy and free democracy. I am proud to have President Schatzel, a true champion of public education and public health, join me tomorrow for President Trump’s Joint Session of Congress, where he will come to the U.S. House chamber and provide an update to Congress,” said Rep. McGarvey. “UofL has already been negatively impacted by the Trump administration’s unconstitutional freeze on federal funding, and if House Republicans successfully cut Medicaid, it could lose over $100 million in funding for critical health care services that thousands of Louisvillians rely on.”
“I am grateful for Congressman McGarvey’s invitation to be his guest at the President’s address to the Joint Session of Congress. The University of Louisville stands at the intersection of innovation, free speech, and intellectual advancement, fueling both academic discovery and real-world solutions. As a cornerstone of our local economy and key provider of health care, UofL drives prosperity and improves lives, serving as a pillar of our community and the Commonwealth. I’m pleased to represent UofL and showcase the critical role the university plays in fostering research, education and patient care and highlight the profound impact federal policy and funding have on higher education,” said President Schatzel.
